Google pledges to improve customer communication following massive Cloud outage
Written by: Nigel Howle

Were you hit by the major Google Cloud outage?

Millions of users were affected for around three hours on Thursday June 12.

Alongside Google Cloud, users of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Chat, Google Cloud Search, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Meet, Google Tasks, Google Voice, Google Lens, Discover, and Voice Search were affected.

Even users of third party platforms such as Spotify and Snapchat may have had services disrupted.

Google is working to produce a full report on the outage but has said the Google Cloud API management platform failed due to invalid data. It is thought there were 503 errors in external API requests during the three-hour outage.

Cloudflare was one of the services hit. A spokesperson said no data was lost. The platform provides network and security products for consumers and businesses.

Google has said it did not provide enough information to customers during the outage.

The company said: “We will improve our external communications, both automated and human, so our customers get the information they need asap to react to issues, manage their systems and help their customers. We’ll ensure our monitoring and communication infrastructure remains operational to serve customers even when Google Cloud and our primary monitoring products are down, ensuring business continuity.”
